Wireless transmitters can now analyze your golf swing

SAN DIEGO, Calif. and OSLO, NORWAY -- Chipcon, the world's leading provider of low-system-cost, low-power RF chipsets and networking software, announced that its CC2400 2.4-GHz RF Transceiver built-in to SmartSwing's golf clubs enable the clubs to wirelessly transmit golf swing analysis data such as speed, acceleration and swing plane to a PC.

Chipcon's chips help make the golf clubs 'intelligent' enough to enable millions of golfers improve their game and more thoroughly enjoy their experience on the golf course.

The SmartSwing driver powered by Chipcon circuitry in the shaft of the golf club, allows the golfer to get immediate and elaborate feedback on the quality of their golf swing and other mechanics. The feedback occurs on the golf course or the golf range and is transferred to a computer via a wireless link. The wireless data transfer needs a rate of around 1 Mbit/second. The only low-cost option that fits this speed and board-space requirements by SmartSwing is the CC2400 2.4-GHz RF transceiver from Chipcon.

"We hit the projected bill of materials and we were able to work with limited board area with the help of Chipcon's low-cost solution," said Dick Eyestone, SmartSwing's chief executive officer. "This is the first driver ever developed with this technology integrated into the shaft."

"Chipcon offers its customers a complete product family consisting of standard RF-ICs that meet the stringent requirements for short-range, low-power wireless applications. We pride ourselves on offering solutions that are the industry's best combination of key parameters such as low cost, high integration, low power and flexibility," said Geir Forre, President and CEO of Chipcon. "The unique intelligent golf club application is a testament to our ability to deliver innovative and market leading solutions."

Chipcon's wireless chips enable OEMs to seamlessly develop compact, high performance and reliable wireless networking products, reducing both time-to-market and, production and test costs to the minimum. Chipcon continues to provide significant design advantage and reduces engineering risk.

CC2400 Transceiver Technology
Chipcon's 2.4 GHz RF transceiver provides product developers and end-users with a true low-cost, low-power single-chip ISM band transceiver with extensive hardware features. When cost, size and world-wide compliance are major design criteria, the CC2400 provides the optimum solution for a reliable and effective two-way wireless digital communication link. The CC2400 is equipped with a number of on-chip features that ensure effective and reliable communication. Full packet handling support significantly offloads the host controller, which again enables use of low-cost, low-end microcontrollers. The agile frequency synthesizer and an effective communication interface makes the CC2400 ideal for frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) and multi-channel systems. Features like packet handling (preamble generation, sync-word insertion/detection, CRC-16 computation over data field), data buffering, burst transmission and data coding significantly simplify system design.

About SmartSwing
SmartSwing is an Austin (TX)-based technology company that has developed a revolutionary golf learning system. Its new line of intelligent golf clubs contain patent-pending technology, which for the first time allows a golfer to visualize and analyze their swing. During normal play or practice, SmartSwing clubs record all relevant swing data for future analysis. Using SmartSwing software in conjunction with our LS100 or LS300 series clubs, golfers have the unique capability to view their swing in a relative sense by superimposing it upon a known good or 'reference' swing. Sophisticated analytics allow for a detailed diagnosis of swing problems and learning progression from swinging on plane, to distance, to consistency. The result -- accelerated learning and greater enjoyment of the game. For more information about the company or its products, visit www.smartswinggolf.com or call 888-794-6418.
