HOUSTON, Texas -- Expect plenty of sunscreen to be available as dozens of foursomes descend on Augusta Pines Golf Club in Spring for the Houston-area "Tee It Up with AT&T" National Charity Golf Tournament to support the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life program.
Scheduled Monday, October 24, this is the first year for the tournament, which is also being held in 20 other cities across the U.S. and Canada.
AT&T's overall goal is to raise $1 million through the national tournament and corporate team participation in Relay For Life events across the country.
"AT&T has been a long-time supporter of our Relay For Life program and a key corporate ally in our continuing fight against cancer," said Tom Seerden, executive director of the American Cancer Society, Houston Metro Market. "We're delighted that Houston is part of AT&T's national golf tournament and hope our local business community can get involved to help support our services and educational programs as well as life-saving cancer research."
Among those playing will be National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, who starred with the University of Houston's legendary "Phi Slamma Jamma" squads of the early 1980s and earned a championship as a member of the Houston Rockets.
"AT&T has had a longtime association with golf, so to it was natural for us to create our own 18-hole relay to support Relay For Life," said Rick Duran, AT&T sales vice president in Houston. "This will give our customers in the Houston-area the chance to play golf on a terrific course, have some fun and contribute to a great cause."
This will mark the sixth consecutive year of AT&T participation in the Relay For Life. In 2004, AT&T raised more money for the Relay than any other company.
In addition to sponsors already signed up for the tournament through national Tour Level packages, local Houston Event Level sponsors are invited. Individual players are also welcome and will be assigned to foursomes.
