VALLERTA NAYARIT, Mexico -- Venezuela's Carlos Larrain and Manuel Bermudez won the 2005 Paradise Village Nations Cup by carding a record-breaking 7-under 64 in the final Foursomes.
Their 21-under-par 262 total was two strokes better than Colombia's Eduardo Herrera and Diego Vanegas, who also shot a brilliant 64 at El Tigre Club De Golf. Both teams will now be playing in the World Golf Championships-Algarve World Cup in Portugal.
The third and final World Cup berth available at the event presented by the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Vallarta Nayarit went to Mexico's Pablo Del Olmo and Alejandro Quiroz. The local favorites defeated Chile in a dramatic four-hole playoff.
The Chileans, leading by three at the start of the day, lost control with four consecutive bogeys between the 14th and the 17th. Mexico took advantage of the catastrophic finish by birdieing the 18th to tie for third place at 18-under par and force the extra session.
"With Colombia running away and Chile playing solid golf, I told my partner we needed to attack," said Venezuela's Carlos Larrain, after finishing the front nine at 1-under pa. "Two or three-under par wasn't going to be good enough."
The 510-yard, par-5 10th hole was the perfect setting to start a fierce attack that would take the Venezuelans to the top at the end of the day. After reaching the green in two, Manuel Bermudez sank a monumental 90-footer for eagle that took them to the third place at 18-under.
The eagle at the 10th was followed up by birdies at the 11th, 13th, 14th and 18th, for the only bogey-free round of the day.
"We caught fire on the back nine. We played really well. Manuel hit great shots and I sank the putts we needed. It was unbelievable," added the experienced Larrain, a Tour De las Americas member who enjoyed victory at the Nations Cup for the second time in three years.
The 25-year-old Manuel Bermudez was thrilled to have the opportunity to play in the $4 million event for the first time in his young professional career.
"It is an honor for me to represent Venezuela at an event of this caliber. I'm very proud, because we reached a goal set at the very beginning of the season," said Bermudez.
An impressive start of three birdies on the first five holes took Colombia to solo second place early. They stayed hot, adding a string of birdie-birdie-eagle-par-birdie between the eighth and 12th to secure the runner-up finish.
"We played the final round just the way we had pictured it. We had a couple of mistakes -- bogeys at the 15th and 16th -- but aside from that, we played brilliant golf all day. We took the right decisions, picking the right clubs every time," commented Herrera, a former PGA TOUR member whose current status is conditional on the Nationwide Tour.
Herrera, 40, will make it to the World Cup for the third time. He played the event the beginning of his professional career back in 1988 and 1989. Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico now join Argentina and Paraguay as the five Latin American teams that will compete in the Algarve World Cup.
The event will be held Nov. 15-20 at Victoria Clube De Golfe - Vilamoura in the Algarve region of Portugal.
