ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The World Golf Hall of Fame, working with Walt Disney Pictures, whose film "The Greatest Game Ever Played" released in theaters throughout the United States on Sept. 30, unveiled a special exhibit on the subject of the film.
Opened on Friday, Oct. 14, the Hall of Fame exhibit features costumes and props from the film, plus original artifacts from the 1913 U.S. Open playoff between Hall of Fame members Francis Ouimet and Harry Vardon, and Ted Ray.
“We are pleased to do our part in sharing the story of what is arguably the game’s most defining moment in this country,” said Jack Peter, senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Hall of Fame. “Opening this exhibit furthers our mission, which is to recognize and celebrate the game’s greatest players and contributors. We’re grateful for Walt Disney Pictures’ assistance and that of the USGA and The Country Club at Brookline for making it happen.”
Ouimet’s winning gold medal, the putter he used and his scorecard from the 1913 U.S. Open, marked by 2005 Hall of Fame Inductee Bernard Darwin, are featured in the exhibit courtesy of the United States Golf Association. On loan from The Country Club at Brookline, the site of the 1913 U.S. Open, are original scrapbooks with photos and newspaper clippings from the event.
The exhibit houses numerous items used during the filming of the movie, including costumes worn by actors portraying Ouimet and Vardon, clubs and bags, plus props seen throughout the film, like Mrs. Ouimet’s scrapbook, the course map and the Brookline pin flag. Large format photos depicting scenes from the movie and behind-the-scene shots are on display around the exhibit to put the items on display in context.
An amateur player from a working class family, Francis Ouimet -- played by Shia LeBeouf -- shocked the golf world when at the 1913 U.S. Open, flanked by his 10-year-old caddie, he defeated his idol, the legendary Harry Vardon -- played by Stephen Dillane -- and Ray. An unlikely match-up, theirs was the greatest match the sport had ever known.
