Rain cancels Oregon Classic's final round, gives Gove the win

JUNCTION CITY, Ore. -- Jeff Gove won the Nationwide Tour's Oregon Classic on Sunday when steady morning rain forced tournament officials to cancel the fourth round.

"I'm still in shock,'' Gove said. "I didn't think we wouldn't be playing today. Growing up in Seattle, I was picturing back to my high school days and playing in the rain. I guess it's the end of the summer and the ground couldn't take any more.''

Gove had rounds of 66, 68 and 67 for a 15-under-par total and three-stroke advantage over Jamie Broce, Kris Cox, Tim Wilkinson and Esteban Toledo on the Shadow Hills course. Bill Haas and David Morland IV tied for sixth, five strokes back.

Gove, also a tour winner in 1995 and 1999, earned $81,000 to jump from 34th to 13th on the money list with $205,199 with four weeks remaining. The top 20 on the money list at the end of the season will earn 2006 PGA Tour cards.

"I've had quite a few chances to win over the last few years,'' Gove said. "It just goes to show that every shot is important. This is huge for me. It's been my goal all year to win a tournament and get back to the PGA Tour. That's a lot closer now.''

The win was Gove's third on the Nationwide Tour, but his first since 1999.

This was the second event shortened by poor weather this season. The BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs was cut to 54 holes after inclement weather forced the cancellation of Saturday's third round.
