ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Florida Professional Golf Tour has announced their Champions Winter series for the central Florida area. Ten 54-hole professional tournaments will comprise the schedule. The tour will include many former PGA Tour and Champions Tour players. This will be a springboard for players fine tuning their games in preparation for the upcoming PGA season.
Each week, from January through March 2006, 72 players will compete on local courses. "This tour fills a void for many players looking for quality golf courses and great competition in the winter time" says tour director Mike Blankenship. The public is invited to see each tournament free of charge.
The series is open to professionals age 45 and over. There is also a Super Seniors division for those over age 55. Every tournament is 54 holes with no cut, making all players eligible to earn money. "Our philosophy is to pay more places and keep more guys playing" adds Blankenship. During each last round, all players finishing out of the money will play for an additional 4 places.
The series kicks off with the first event in Clermont at The Legends Golf & Country Club on January 3-5. The final event will be the Champions Winter Series Championship on March 6-9 with additional money added to the purse.
