DURHAM, N.C. -- Known for superb cuisine and exceptional service, the celebrated Fairview Dining Room, located at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, has garnered a 2005 Wine Spectator magazine’s Award of Excellence. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Fairview’s wine list has received the prestigious commendation.
Wine Spectator, the authoritative magazine on viticulture, annually reviews restaurant wine lists from around the world, recognizing those with outstanding offerings. An Award of Excellence is given based upon a restaurant’s proven commitment to maintaining a fine wine list, with a sufficient selection of better producers along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. This year the magazine selected only 3,606 restaurants in the world to receive the distinguished recognition.
“We have rigorous requirements for an Award of Excellence. Establishments must provide vintages and appellations for all selections – including wines by-the-glass,” said James Molesworth, director of Wine Spectator’s Restaurant Awards Program. “Only those restaurants with the finest attention to their offerings are selected for this recognition.”
Commitment to excellence is the Fairview’s number one goal. And to ensure that diners sample only from the finest vintages and receive unsurpassed service, the Inn has its resident sommelier, Drew Lazarus. Lazarus has been with the Inn for close to two years and continues to dazzle guests with optimal wine tasting experiences. “My passion is pairing excellent wine with outstanding gourmet fare,” says Lazarus. “I can’t think of a better place to pursue that passion than the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club; its commitment to excellence is unparalleled.”
The Fairview Dining Room is one of Durham’s finest gourmet establishments. The Inn recently expanded and relocated its flagship restaurant in conjunction with its $25 million total renovation and expansion project. The Fairview now features glorious vistas of the prestigious Robert Trent Jones-designed Duke University Golf Club, al fresco dining, updated décor, additional specialty dishes and tasting menus.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by Wine Spectator again,” stated Jason Cunningham, executive chef at the Fairview. “We pride ourselves in creating an excellent dining experience for our guests by offering the highest-quality innovative cuisine and finest wines.” In addition to a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, the Fairview is a 13-year recipient of a AAA Four Diamond Award for its exceptional customer service and facilities.
The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club is located on the campus of Duke University, only twenty minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport and ten minutes from Research Triangle Park, and is the only AAA Four Diamond hotel in Durham.
