PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The PGA of America took its appreciation of its members to a new level this week, as it inaugurated the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame with an induction ceremony at the PGA Historical Center at PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The ceremonies honored 122 PGA members who have made significant and enduring contributions to The PGA of America and the game of golf, and will feature engraved granite bricks on the south portico of the PGA Historical Center.

The 2005 inductees are PGA Honorary President M.G. Orender, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; and Craig Harmon, PGA Head Professional at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., the 2004 PGA Golf Professional of the Year.

Orender will lead a delegation of 31 overall Past Presidents into the Hall, a list that begins with the Association's first president, Robert White, who served from 1916-1919.

"I'm humbled by the honor," said Orender. "I have never set out to receive any accolades, and to be considered to this level by your peers and be in the same Hall is very special. To have the privilege of cutting the ribbon for the dedication of the PGA Historical Center (in 2002), and to now have my name added to the Hall of Fame is a more than I can dream. I'm most grateful."

Harmon heads a 51-member group who were recipients of The PGA's highest annual honor - Golf Professional of the Year. The Award was first presented in 1955 to Bill Gordon of Chicago's Tam O'Shanter Country Club. Four PGA Past Presidents are also among the PGA Golf Professional of the Year group - the late Warren Orlick (1960), the late Don Padgett (1961); Ken Lindsay (1983) and Tom Addis III (1989).

Jock Olson, PGA Head Professional at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn., was the 2002 PGA Golf Professional of the Year. He said that he is the "second Jock" to be honored in the Hall of Fame, referring to the late Jock Hutchison, a two-time major Champion and respected PGA Teaching Professional.

"I served on the Hall of Fame Committee when I was on the Board of Directors," said Olson. "At that time, we still had the PGA World Golf Hall of Fame in Pinehurst (N.C.). We had hoped to have a Hall of Fame to honor the PGA Professional, and that time has finally come. I am extremely honored, and I tell my family that I'm too young to go into a Hall of Fame, but I am indebted, and I deeply thank The PGA of America."

The PGA Past Presidents and PGA Golf Professionals of the year will join 44 PGA Members who were among the original inductees in the PGA Hall of Fame that began in 1940, upon the suggestion of legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice.

"It is certainly an honor that ranks at the top for me," said Past PGA President Gary Schaal of Surfside Beach, S.C. "I'm really flattered, and it will be fun to meet some old friends. It is a terrific group of individuals to be a part of such a ceremony. Years ago, the thought of a Hall of Fame and Historical Center were just ideas. It has materialized, and you have to thank the leadership of The PGA for accomplishing this. It is fantastic."

Dedicated in 2002, The PGA of America opened the PGA Historical Center in PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla., which paved the way for a home for the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame.

The PGA Historical Center celebrates the growth of golf in the United States, as paralleled by the advancement of The Professional Golfers' Association of America.

The Center's showcase is the Probst Library, one of the world's premier golf collections of both periodicals and hardbound books. In addition, the Center presents memorabilia from throughout golf history and displays that honor many of the Association's premier golf Professionals and events.

The PGA Historical Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Easter Sunday, and weekends during the summer from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge. The center is open year-round to researchers by special appointment.

The PGA Historical Center is located in PGA Village, a premier resort community in Port St. Lucie, Fla., featuring the award-winning The PGA Golf Club, PGA Learning Center and PGA Education Center. The PGA Golf Club, The PGA of America's first owned and operated public golf facility, also has all three of its world-class courses as members of the Audubon International Signature Status program for environmental sensitivity.

The PGA of America, founded in 1916, is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf, while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.
