DELAND, Fla. -- Victoria Hills Golf Club – the award-winning Ron Garl design at the heart of Victoria Park, a St. Joe community in DeLand – announced that Robbie Wight and Wesley Graham won the 16-18 and 13-15 age divisions, respectively, at the 2005 Florida State Golf Association Junior Match Play Invitational held this past weekend.
Wight, from West Palm Beach, defeated Boynton Beach’s Andrew Nottenkamper in 19 holes. Graham, a resident of Port Orange who captured the 2005 FSGA Boys Junior Championship earlier this month, defeated Phillip Choi of Orlando, 3 and 1.
“The course was a great test for these talented young golfers,” says Victoria Hills general manager David Buth. “The Tour-quality conditions and challenging closing holes made for exciting finishes in both matches.”
In the 16-18 age division finals, Wight was two down to Nottenkamper with two holes to play. He carded a par on Victoria Hills’ 370-yard par-4 17th hole and followed with a birdie on the 548-yard par-5 18th to send the match into extra holes. He then took the championship on the first playoff hole with a par, capping a dramatic come-from-behind victory.
Recently named America’s No. 19 new course in Golfweek magazine’s inaugural listing of the “Top 40 America’s Best New Courses” (June 2005), Victoria Hills is tucked away in the historic college town of DeLand, just north of Orlando. Designed by Florida native Ron Garl, this majestic layout boasts more than 50 feet of elevation change, taking advantage of the area’s natural rolling hills, foliage and wetlands. Tall pines and hearty oaks frame the course while sandy waste areas and pristine lakes make for inspiring sight lines.
