Torres Blancas’ Papa solves the Buick Scramble puzzle

ORLANDO, Fla. – Oct. 12, 2004 – Amateur Kendall Papa of Arizona's Torres Blancas Golf Club drained a 15-foot eagle putt on the third playoff hole to secure the 2004 Buick Scramble National Championship Gross Division title on Sunday in Orlando, Florida.

In the net division, Hidden Creek Golf Course of Burleson, Texas, captured the net division title by eight strokes with a final-round net 16-under-par 56 for an overall net 68-under-par 234.

"It is an honor to present the trophies to the 2004 Buick Scramble National Champions," said M.G. Orender, president of the PGA of America. "It's a great pleasure for the PGA of America to partner with Buick and sponsor the world's largest amateur golf tournament."

Winning gross division members of Torres Blancas Golf Course of Green Valley, Ariz., included Ben Papa, Gary Smith, Ryan Scott and Kendall Papa and PGA Professional Rich Elias.

Members of the net division champions from Hidden Creek Golf Course included PGA Professional Andy Franks and amateurs Eric Kelley, Dan Lockler, Rikki Lackey, and Jim Freed.

Torres Blancas Golf Club and Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club of Temple Terrace, Fla., each finished the final round tied for the lead at 54-under-par. Led by Elias, Torres Blancas Golf Club birdied the entire back nine en route to its 54-under-par four-round total. Temple Terrace birdied its first 11 holes in the fourth round to equal Torres Blancas at the top of the leaderboard following the conclusion of play.

On the third playoff hole at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Torres Blancas reached the 529-yard par-5 in two, and Kendall Papa secured the victory with the eagle.

"This is one of the best golfing experiences by far," Elias said following the conclusion of the awards ceremony. "My team was excited enough to be here, but to win, I don't think it is anything they could have imagined."

A total of 214 teams representing 39 states throughout the U.S. and six teams from Canada, competed on six Orlando area courses for a combined $287,200 purse. Following the third round, a sudden-death chip-off took place at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club practice putting green in both divisions to determine the cut line for the top 24 teams. Four teams battled for three spots in the net division chip-off, while 13 teams competed for four spots in the gross division chip-off.

The 72-hole tournament was played on Orange County National's Panther Lake and Crooked Cat Courses; Walt Disney World's Magnolia and Palm Courses; Celebration Golf Club and The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Grande Lakes Orlando.
