PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Bentley Eidsmo, of Monterey, Calif.; Angela Oh, of Maple Shade, N.J.; Luke Guthrie, of Quincy, Ill.; and Cassandra Blaney, of Rochester, N.Y., are the winners of the Player of the Year awards in their respective divisions of the 2005 Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series, which concluded its 10th consecutive year of providing affordable and competitive golf for juniors age 13 to 17.
In the boys' 16-17 division, Eidsmo captured the Player of the Year honors with 305 points, by winning at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; placing third at Sioux City (Iowa) Country Club; and finishing in a tie for third place at New Mexico State University Golf Club in Las Cruces. Nate Barbee of Dakota Dunes, S.C., finished in second place with 240 points.
Oh clinched the POY award by taking home the title at the final event this season at Royce Brook Golf Club in Hillsborough, N.J., as she was awarded 150 points for the victory. She also prevailed as the Champion of the second and third events at Kearney Hill Golf Link in Lexington, Ky.; and Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C., respectively. Furthermore, she finished in third place at Penn State University, in State College, Pa. Oh finished with 530 points, and Christina Pachuta, of Perry, N.Y., finished in second place with 335 final points.
In the boys' 13-15 division, Guthrie captured POY honors with a total of 280 points; a mere 40 points over Roy Steinberg, of Israel, and 60 points over Ryan Gay of Gardiner, Maine. Guthrie was victorious in the eighth event at Elmcrest Country Club; tied for second place at Kearney Hill Golf Link; and tied for fifth place at Duke University Golf Club.
Blaney dominated the girls' 13-15 division by capturing four wins this season: Duke University Golf Club; Kiawah Island Resort in Johns Island, S.C.; Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, N.H; and Royce Brook Golf Club. Furthermore, she finished in second place at Kearney Hill Golf Links; and tied for second place at Penn State. Blaney participated in six of the 12 events, and finished in the Top 2 in each event, awarding her 775 POY points. Katie Sisler of Kailua, Hawaii, completed the season in second place for the POY standings with 280 points.
The PGA Junior Series marked its third year with title sponsor Callaway Golf and is nationally recognized in the GolfWeek Sagarin points system and Junior Golf Scoreboard, which debuted in the summer of 1996. The program has attracted boys and girls representing 50 states, 18 countries, and six continents, along with players from Bermuda, Guam, The Mariana and Marshall Islands, and the District of Columbia.
The PGA of America, founded in 1916, is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf, while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession.
