Women's British Open Champion Jeong Jang latest to qualify for Samsung World Championship

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- A month ago, another young Korean woman golfer took a giant step when Jeong Jang won the Women's British Open and qualified for the Samsung World Championship, which will be played Oct. 10-16, at the Canyons Course at Bighorn Golf Club.

Jang, 25, the daughter of a retired Korean policeman, followed the same path as U.S. Women's Open champion Birdie Kim, using her first career title to win a major championship and secure a berth in the Samsung World Championship.

"I feel just great," Jang, who lives in Orlando, Fla., said after completing her wire-to-wire win. "It's fantastic. I didn't know that golf could be this much fun."

Jang, who celebrated her victory by returning to Korea to visit family, is now sixth on the LPGA money list with a career-high $744,161. She ranked 12th on the LPGA money list with $680,080 last year, when she tied for sixth at the Samsung World Championship. She is the eighth first-time winner on the LPGA Tour this year. She is the fourth player from South Korea to win a major. She was the third wire-to-wire winner this year, and the fourth to win with four rounds in the 60s.

The Samsung World Championship features an elite 20-player field. Annika Sorenstam has qualified in four categories: defending champion, winning the first two majors of 2005 -- the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the McDonald's LPGA Championship -- and leading the 2004 Official ADT Money List. In addition to Kim and Jang, others who have qualified for the Championship are 2004 Vare Trophy winner Grace Park and 15-year-old amateur sensation Michelle Wie, who has accepted a Championship Selection Committee invitation.

Additional entries will be awarded the leading player from the Ladies European Tour (LET), and to the leading money winners from this year's LPGA Tour money list.

The Samsung World Championship, a 72-hole stroke play event, has been contested on five continents in 24 years. The field returns to the Canyons Course at BIGHORN Golf Club for a shot at the $212,500 first prize out of a purse of $850,000.

Tickets can be purchased by calling the Samsung World Championship office toll free at 1-888-345-LPGA (5742).
