REUNION, Fla. -- Impressive since they were unveiled in late 2004, the Independence Course and Legacy Course at Reunion Resort & Club of Orlando have added to their growing list of accolades, each being named among America's Best New Courses by Golfweek magazine.
Based on judging by Golfweek's panel of course raters, the Tom Watson-designed Independence Course ranked No. 12, while the Arnold Palmer-created Legacy Course was No. 21 on the list of top 40 courses that opened during 2003 and 2004.
"This is truly quite an honor to have both of our resort courses make this prestigious list," said Jerry Thompson, vice president of golf operations for Ginn Clubs & Resorts. "We believed we were creating something special here. Thanks to the magnificent work, creativity and dedication exhibited by Wayne Smith, senior vice president of Ginn Golf, his team at Ginn Golf and the Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson design teams, our vision has become a reality."
The focal point of recreation at Reunion Resort & Club of Orlando is golf, including its two Signature courses -- the 7,147-yard Independence Course, Watson's first course in Florida, and the 6,876-yard Legacy Course, both situated on a 2,300-acre former citrus grove in Osceola County. The Tradition Course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design, is to open in 2006 on Reunion's west side.
The Independence Course, set on the lower end of the Highland Ridge and Davenport Creek Preserve, offers un-Florida like undulating terrain with elevation variations as much as 45 feet from tee to green. Watson deftly designed subtle openings to greens to demand a strategic, well thought out approach shots from players. Spacious, closely mown green complexes put a premium on a creative short game. Holes two through six border the Davenport Creek Preserve.
The Legacy Course is known for utilizing a combination of natural rolling terrain with mature trees, pristine natural preserve areas and extensive landscaping. The Legacy's short, par-4, 13th hole -- only 349 yards for the championship tees and 283 yards from the member tees - has built a reputation as a vintage "go for broke" Palmer-style challenge that excites low- and high-handicappers alike.
Reunion Resort & Club of Orlando is being called "America's new breed of family resort towns," named for its creation of a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere of small-town U.S.A. blended with recreation and entertainment to create an authentic family vacation experience unmatched by any other Central Florida destination resort.
Once complete, the $2 billion, 2,300-acre Resort, will include shopping, golf, a multi-level water pavilion and fantasy pool complex, a world-class spa and fitness center, tennis pavilion, entertainment center, kids' camp, horse stables and more than 18 miles of walking, biking and riding trails within steps of the community's homes.
