Countdown to the season's final major

17 days to go!

In 1942, Army Corporal Jim Turnesa was facing Navy recruit Sam Snead in the finals of the 25th PGA Championship at Seaview Country Club in Atlantic City, N.J. Snead, who was to report to the Navy the day after the final match, trailed Turnesa by three holes after the morning 18-hole round. In the afternoon, Turnesa bogeyed the 24th hole to square the match. Snead grabbed the lead for good after 28 holes and went on to win his first major championship, 2 and 1.

"It was my most satisfying championship," Snead said in an interview years later during an exhibition in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. "I was allowed to compete by the Navy, and I jumped at the chance, and was able to win. I never forgot it and I was really proud to win that PGA Championship."

The season's final major marks its return to the Garden State, Aug. 8-14, when the world's strongest field gathers for the 87th PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
