Pepperdine to host Club Glove Intercollegiate event

CALIFORNIA – Oct, 8, 2004 - Following a two-week break, the nationally-ranked Pepperdine men’s golf team will continue its fall schedule when it hosts the 12-team The Club Glove Intercollegiate beginning Monday at the par-72, 6,883-yard Saticoy Country Club in nearby Somis, California.

The two-day 54-hole event format calls for 36 holes to be played on Monday and the final 18 holes are slated for Tuesday. The field includes four teams that are ranked in the Top 25 by Golfweek, Golfstat or Golf World. Kent State is No. 8 in the Golfweek ratings while Arizona State (10) and Pepperdine (19) are ranked in the Golf World poll. Texas Tech is No. 20 in Golfweek.

Also scheduled to compete in the tournament are Baylor, Coastal Carolina, Houston, North Carolina State, SMU, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UTEP.

Pepperdine is the defending champion of The Club Glove Intercollegiate after carding a tournament-record tying 7-under par total of 871. The Waves registered an 11-stroke victory over runner-up Arizona State.

Junior Michael Putnam tied Tulsa's David Inglis for individual medallist honors with a 1-under par 54-hole score of 215. Putnam was declared the tournament winner based on his birdie on his final hole while Inglis shot par on the 18th hole.

Pepperdine is coming off a 10th-place showing at the Ping/Golfweek Preview Tournament at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 27. The Waves shot a 37-over par score of 877. Oklahoma State captured the team title with a 9-over par total of 849.

Putnam was Pepperdine's top individual performer as he finished at even-par 210 to tie for fifth place. His performance at the Preview Tournament plus a Top 15 finish at the season-opening UCLA Gold Rush Intercollegiate earned him the West Coast Conference's (WCC) "Player of the Month" for September.

After two tournaments, Putnam is currently Pepperdine's top individual with a 70.67 stroke average in six rounds. Following The Club Glove Intercollegiate, the Waves are next in action when the travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, to compete in the Tennessee Tournament of Champions at Holston Hills Country Club.
