WESTFIELD CENTER, Ohio - The gallery wanted a shootout during the final round of the 2005 Westfield Junior PGA Championship, and they got one when Joe Monte, of Chantilly, Va., and Alex Volpenhein, of Edgewood, Ky., traded the lead back and forth over the final nine holes. But a little luck was on the Kentuckian's side, as Monte bogeyed holes Nos. 15 and 16 to lose the lead, which paved the way for Volpenhein to take home the Championship at the Westfield Group Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio. Stephanie Kono, of Honolulu, managed to hold on to her lead as well, as she secured her girls' division Championship on hole No. 17.
"Of course, I was watching the leader board," said Kono, who finished her day with a 1-over-par 72, for a Championship total 3-under-par 281. "It's hard not to be aware of what your opponent is doing. I knew what (runner-up) Kristina (Wong) was shooting, and I knew what I had to do. I think making par down the stretch with a three-stroke lead really is not that easy on this golf course. I really wasn't comfortable, until I made that birdie on hole No. 17, which put me ahead by two."
Kristina Wong, of Vestal, N.Y., finished in second place, after making a valiant effort to try to take the lead from Kono.
"I looked at the leader board all the time, to see where I was," said Wong, who shot a final-round even-par 71, to finish the Championship at 1-under-par 283. "I tried to catch up, but she (Kono) played really well. I felt a lot more pressure coming through the last three holes, knowing I was still down. But I would rather be chasing, then holding the lead. I tried to play more aggressively, but my putts just wouldn't fall."
Grace Woo, of Burbank, Calif., Catherina Wang of Orlando, Fla., and Michelle Grilli, of Lutherville, Md., all finished in a tie for third place at 1-over-par 285.
The emotional boys' final came down to two bogey mistakes by Monte, who had taken the lead from Volpenhein on No. 11 with a birdie, after tying his competitor with an eagle on hole No. 10.
"I have never played under that amount of pressure in my life. It was tough to hold the lead," said Monte, with tears welling up in his eyes. Monte, who shot one stroke better in the final round than winner Volpenhein, finished the Championship with a 4-under-par 67, for a 72-hole total of 11-under-par 273. "I didn't let up on him (Volpenhein) at all. I just stopped making the shots. It just got tough to keep on grinding away and making birdies."
Volpenhein, who was also choked up with emotion after his victory, finished his Championship winning round at 3-under-par 68, with a birdie on No. 17, and a par on No. 18.
"Joe (Monte) played so good," said Volpenhein, who adds this victory to his other PGA win this summer at the Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series Tournament at Kearney Hill. "He made the birdie on No. 4, and then knocked in the 40-footer on No. 10 (for eagle). When you play like that, you usually win. I just stayed focused and really didn't worry about what he was doing, and it ended up in my favor. It was not that big of a deal when I went one-down, because there was so much golf left to be played that anything could have happened. I battled and stayed in it, and I ended up winning."
Judson Eustaquio of Lake Worth, Fla., was in the hunt for the Championship, after his final-round of 5-under-par 66, but ended in sole possession of third place, with his four-day total of 8-under-par 276.
"I got it rolling real quick on the front nine, by making four birdies in a row from hole No. 3 to No. 6," said Eustaquio, who finished in fourth place at Westfield a year ago. "I looked at the scoreboard, and I was 8-under for the Championship. Then, I saw the leaders were at 10- and 9-under, and I was like, 'Oh boy, I've got a shot at this.' I tried to keep the momentum going, but the last nine holes were pretty tough. After No.10, I didn't make another birdie until No. 18."
The Championship had been hampered by weather delays, with the second and third rounds having suspensions for more than two hours and forty minutes due to thunderstorms, but the final round was completed with no delays.
