Tiger Woods to lead golf's greatest field of players at 87th PGA Championship

Palm Beach Gardens, Florida -- On the heels of his victory at the British Open at St. Andrews, as well as his victory at The Masters in April, Tiger Woods will be looking to capture his third of four 2005 Majors when the 87th PGA Championship comes to Springfield, New Jersey, August 8-14, 2005 at the famed Baltusrol Golf Club. Playing his first competitive golf ever in the state, Tiger will play in what is arguably the strongest field in golf at the 87th PGA Championship, the final leg of golf's Grand Slam, which returns to New Jersey for the first time in 63 years.

While Sunday tickets for the 87th PGA Championship are sold-out, the PGA of America has announced that weekly and daily ticket packages remain available and can be purchased online at www.pga2005.com, or by calling 1-800-PGA-TCKT.

"Tiger's victory at the British Open, combined with his 2005 Masters title, makes his appearance at the 87th PGA Championship truly historical," said Andy Bush, Tournament Director, 87th PGA Championship. "As Tiger pursues Jack Nicklaus' record 18 Major titles, it is only fitting that he go for his 11th Major on Baltusrol's Lower Course, a golf course that Jack helped make famous with Major championship victories in 1967 and 1980, respectively."

At 650 yards, the Lower Course's famed 17th hole will stand alone as the longest par-5 in Major Championship history. This hole, along with Baltusrol's signature 4th hole, a 194 yard, par-3 layout, will be among the most challenging for players such as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els.

During its 109-year history, Baltusrol Golf Club has hosted 15 national golf championships, including seven U.S.Open Championships, four U.S. Amateur Championships, two Women's U.S. Open Championships and two U.S. Women's Amateur Championships.

The PGA Championship is one of four premier golf events conducted by the PGA of America. Others include the Ryder Cup Matches, the Senior PGA Championship and the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which brings together winners of golf's four major championships. Since 1916, golf's best professionals have been competing for the PGA Championship's coveted Wanamaker Trophy. Past champions include Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead and Walter Hagen, among others.
