Since 1976, more than 200,000 juniors have competed on the PGA Section level to earn a berth in the Championship. The PGA of America, founded in 1916, is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf, while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.
Players to Watch:
Chris DeForest, of Cottekill, N.Y., is returning for his third shot at winning the boys' Championship. In 2004, DeForest finished in a tie for 10th place. Tony Mapu Finau, of Salt Lake City, also returns after finishing in a tie for 10th place in 2004. In the girls' division, Stephanie Kono, of Honolulu, returns after finishing alone in fourth place in 2004.
Player Notes:
EXCHANGE STUDENT: One of the special invites competing in the girls' division is South African Ashleigh Simon. Last year, Simon became the first amateur to win on the South African Women's Tour, by capturing the 2004 South African Women's Open. Not only did Simon tie the lowest score ever on the Tour with a 63 during her final round, but she also became the Tour's youngest winner at 14 years old.
ALL IN THE FAMILY: Returnee Tony Mapu Finau, 15, of Salt Lake City, will be playing this week with his younger brother, Gipper Finau. Gipper, 14, earned a spot in the Championship, after winning the 2005 Westfield Junior Utah PGA Championship. Tony earned a berth in the Westfield Junior PGA Championship by finishing in the Top 10 in 2004.
HIGHLIGHT SHOW: A one-hour highlight show about the 2005 Westfield Junior PGA Championship will air on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at 6 p.m. EDT, on The Golf Channel.
