Nike now accepting nominations for fifth annual Casey Martin Award

Beaverton, OR – Nike is now accepting nominations for the Fifth Annual Casey Martin Award.

What: 2005 Casey Martin Award

Who:
Nike’s annual Casey Martin Award recognizes an individual for his or her courage to pursue a sport of choice despite challenges or barriers—whether physical, mental, societal or cultural. As well as receiving special recognition, the recipient will present a grant award of $25,000 to a qualified nonprofit organization of his or her choice.

Criteria for Nike’s Casey Martin Award:

Individual of any age with a disability as defined by the Department of Justice
Individual has pursued a chosen sport to a level of success despite challenges (physical, psychological, societal or cultural)
Individual has taken a personal and public stand, as a role model and advocate, to support and inspire others with disabilities to pursue and excel in sport
If selected, nominee must be available the first week of November 2005 to travel to Nike’s World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon (award recipient will be notified of specific date)

Why: The award is presented in honor of professional golfer Casey Martin, who succeeded in his sport while overcoming challenges posed by a rare circulatory condition. Martin stood up for his rights and those of other athletes with disabilities by fighting for and winning legal permission to ride a golf cart during competition.

When: Nominations must be received by Monday, July 11, 2005.
