Darrell Kestner, a fourth place finisher in last month's 38th PGA Club Professional Championship, turned in his best career performance on the Champions Tour, finishing tied for sixth in last week's Commerce Bank Championship at The Red Course at Eisenhower Park in E. Meadow, N.Y.
Kestner, 51, finished with rounds of 65, 68 and 70, for a 10-under-par 203 total. Kestner, who earned $48,600 for his showing, has now competed in nine Champions Tour events since 2003, and also finish tied for 31st finish in the Senior PGA Championship last May.
PGA Club Professional Champion Mike Small carried his momentum from a victory a week earlier at Kiawah Island (S.C.) Golf Resort, to compete against a world-class field in last week's Cialis Western Open at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont, Ill.
Small began strong with a 2-under-par 69, and made the cut at even-par 142. But, he struggled with rounds of 78 and 80 through the weekend, finishing 70th and earning $10,000. Small, who has competed in 42 career Tour events since 1990, tied for 27th at last year's Cialis Western Open. He earned a berth this year through a sponsor's exemption.
"Every Professional's goal is to make the cut, and I did that," said Small. "I started well, but didn't get a couple breaks in the second and third rounds, missed a few putts and wore out at the end. I was happy to get the chance to play and will look past the weekend to other events."
Small will compete in the Illinois Open the first week of August, before heading a 25-member delegation of PGA Professionals in the 87th PGA Championship, Aug. 11-14, 2005, at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
