Wintonbury Hills named Connecticut's Best New Course by Golfweek

The Town of Bloomfield and Billy Casper Golf (“BCG”) announce that Wintonbury Hills Golf Course – the award-winning Pete Dye design located just minutes from Hartford – has been named the No. 23 new course in America in Golfweek magazine’s inaugural listing of the “Top 40 America’s Best New Courses.”

Appearing in the June 18 edition, this ranking was derived from the efforts of Golfweek’s nationwide team of more than 375 course raters. They considered all public, private and resort courses to open in 2003 and 2004, rendering their judgment on the basis of 10 standards of evaluation.

“To be considered among these great courses, many of which are the most exclusive in the world, is a true testament to what Wintonbury Hills offers everyday golfers,” says Director of Golf, Doug Juhasz. “We look forward to continuing our dedication to providing the region’s players with the ultimate public golf experience.”

One of America’s most-respected golf publications, Golfweek has a readership of more than 400,000. The No. 1 spot on the list was awarded to Friar’s Head, a Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw design in Baiting Hollow, N.Y.

“Although fewer courses are opening now than were a decade ago, this list demonstrates there has been no slack in the quality of today’s new courses,” said Bradley S. Klein, Golfweek’s America’s Best Courses Panel Director. “It is a reflection of golfers’ expectations and the skill of modern designers, builders and superintendents.”

The first and only course in New England designed by the legendary Pete Dye, Wintonbury Hills is located only 15 minutes from Hartford in the heart of Connecticut’s beautiful hill country. Most recently the municipally-owned course was named to the elite “Zagat Survey 2005: America’s Top Golf Courses.” Wintonbury Hills has also been ranked the state’s No. 1 course by Golfweek for two consecutive years, named to GOLF magazine’s nationwide list of “The Top 10 New Courses You Can Play” and selected as the regions best new public course by The New England Journal of Golf.

Wintonbury Hills is a par-70, 18 hole championship layout featuring well-thought-out green complexes, strategic bunkering and nearly 100 feet of elevation change. The course offers a blend of links style holes and a forested look that typifies golf in the Northeast.

Wintonbury Hills joins a long list of Pete Dye courses that have garnered international acclaim, including the TPC at Sawgrass, Harbour Town Golf Links, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island and Casa de Campo’s Teeth of the Dog course in the Dominican Republic.
Billy Casper Golf (“BCG”), the nation’s fifth-largest golf-course management company, has provided turnkey-management services to Wintonbury Hills since August 2003, including agronomy, staffing and training, clubhouse operations, golf instruction, marketing and public relations, special events, financial management, and food and beverage merchandising.
