Duran Golf Club of Viera, Fla. to open July 1

Viera, FL -- Duran Golf Club in Viera, Florida, is destined to become the newest and most exciting golf project on central Florida's East Coast. The club is scheduled to open July 1. Local dignitaries and a select group of 100 golfers will officially open the course with a charity fundraising event.

Designed by golf course architect, Lewis "Chip" Powell, the championship 18-hole, par 72 course will play from 5,309 yards to 7,151 yards depending on which tees are used.

The course is the focal point of the master planned 'Viera Community,' Florida's Space Coast's newest development that features residential and commercial property, hospitals, restaurants, shopping, schools and parks.

"A tremendous amount of thought went into the course planning and design. The golf course is extremely playable for golfers of all skill levels," said Dave Tomczak, general manager at Duran Golf Club. "The fairways are wide and generous, and the rough will be maintained at a very reasonable playing height.

With minimal yet strategic bunkering, the course harkens back to the 'Golden Age' of golf course architecture and invokes memories of the masters like Ross, Mackenzie and Tillinghast.

"Depending on the prevailing costal winds, Duran's par-5 holes will play as stout three shot holes, or the holes can be attacked with two well played strokes to the green," said Tomczak. "In addition, the pars 4s require different clubs and inventive shot-making for birdie opportunities. Our par-3 holes will hold the key to good scoring."

Duran Golf Club is a daily fee course with annual, semi-annual, and special weekday and afternoon membership programs available. Duran will also offer a special rate for Florida residents.

What sets Duran Golf Club apart from other clubs on Florida's East Coast is its state-of-the-art Development Center. The expansive practice range has two sets of tees - one for the daily patrons and the other for private lessons, clinics and golf schools. The practice range has seven elevated target greens guarded by coquina bunkers. When practicing, golfers can aim at targets and not just flagsticks.

Duran also has a nine-hole par 3 course that winds its way around the practice range with holes ranging from 50 - 130 yards. This facility allows Duran a golfing alternative to its patrons. The Development Center will feature instructional staff, a golf shop, snack bar, lesson review room and a fitting and repair shop. What's more, plans call for lighting the entire Development Center extending playing time into the evening.

Russell Glasby, head golf professional, was recently appointed to manage Duran's Golf Operation. "There is a tremendous amount of interest in Duran from players all across the state," says Glasby. "We are looking forward to opening on July 1st, and I want to extend an invitation to Florida golfers to come and enjoy what Duran has to offer."
