“Nick Balcken started his round with a par, bogie, par, bogie, and then birdied 9 of the next 13 holes to shoot a course record of 65,” said Gary Welshhans, Wooster Country Club Golf Professional. “We (Wooster Country Club) are 103 years old… hundreds of thousands of rounds have been played and that’s the lowest score ever here.”
Brad Apple, Sylvania County Club Pro, started out his round on the 12th hole with a par and birdied the next 6 holes to come in second with a 67. Todd Lancaster, from the Walden Golf & County Club shot a 69 for third place.
"Another milestone was achieved when Faith Egli, the golf pro at Congress Lake County Club, accepted our invitation to play as the first LPGA competitor in the 23-year history of the tournament,” said Allan Martin, Boys’ Village Director of Development.
“She is the only female head golf pro at a private country club in Ohio,” added Welshhans, “and shot a 76 today… her first time on our course… missed our course record for women by only three.”
The top 5-man team (a foursome plus their assigned golf pro) consisted of Nick Balcken, and the Akron Brass team of Mike Kling, Butch Momchilov, Brad Muntin, and Dan Peters.
The top amateur foursome consisted of Ken Bevington, Charles Perkins, Robert Rein, and Doug Yoder, representing the Chardon Fraternal Order of Eagles.
David Boyle, with his National City Bank corporate team, successfully defended last year’s win of the coveted Basford Cup for yet another year.
