Golf Course Management, the monthly magazine of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), was honored earlier this month with five awards - three of them first-place honors - for design, photography and writing by the Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association (TOCA). The awards were presented at TOCA's annual meeting, held this year in Memphis, Tenn.
GCM's design team of Art/Production Manager Roger Billings, Designer Becky Drager and Prepress/Production Specialist Kelly Neis were honored with first-place in the Overall Magazine Design category for their work on the Aug. 2004 issue. The award marked the fourth consecutive year that GCM has been the first-place recipient in this category.
The magazine also earned first-place in the Best Photography category for Associate Editor Seth Jones' photo of comedian George Lopez, which appeared in the magazine's Sept. 2004 Reflections issue.
"How about that weather?" by John Fech and Fred Baxendale, Ph.D., both Extension horticulturists at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, also captured a first-place nod in the writing category for Best Ornamental Feature. The story detailed how changing weather patterns can affect the insects that target plantings on golf courses and was published in the Aug. 2004 issue.
Senior Staff Writer Terry Ostmeyer earned a pair of merit awards for his work in 2004. He was honored in the Product Information category for "The next big thing"" a story on biotechnology and golf course management that was published in Jan. 2004, and in the General Feature category for "A man apart," a feature on 2005 Old Tom Morris Award winner Jack Nicklaus that was published in Dec. 2004.
In addition to Billings, Drager, Neis, Jones and Ostmeyer, GCM's staff is comprised of Editor-in-Chief Ed Hiscock, Editor Scott Hollister, Managing Editor Bunny Smith, Science Editor Teresa Carson, Senior Associate Editor Angela Nitz, Newsline Editor Amy Bird and Coordinator Shelly Howard.
