Rutgers shines at Elon Sea Trail Invitational

SUNSET BEACH, NC, - Oct. 2, 2004 – The men’s golf team highlighted a successful weekend for Rutgers at the Elon Sea Trail Men’s and Women’s Invitational. The men, paced by tournament champion Mike Kosup’s (Flemington, NJ) six-under-par 138 (69-69), won the team championship at the 6,761-yard, par-72 Rees Jones Course. The Scarlet Knights placed eighth in the women’s tournament, held at the 5,947-yard, par-72 William Byrd layout.

The RU men shot a 579 (288-291) to win their second consecutive tournament title, also taking top honors at the Rutgers Invitational. Kosup won his first career title, beating George Mason’s Mike Cavanagh by one stroke. He was one of two Scarlet Knights to finish in the top five of the 22-team tournament. Senior Brent Pittman (Montvale, NJ) shot a two-under-par 142 (70-72) to tie for fourth overall.

Junior Erick Morales (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) finished tied for 15th with a three-over-par 147 (73-74), while junior Jason Bataille (South Plainfield, NJ) and sophomore Seth Hirschhorn (Willingboro, NJ) fired a 153 to tie for 42nd overall. Batialle, coming off a victory at the Rutgers Invitational, carded rounds of 77 and 76. Hirschhorn shot a 76 and a 77 for the two-round tournament.

The women finished eighth out of 20 schools. Longwood University won the team championship with a 624 (307-317), while High Point’s Kate O’Sullivan took individual honors with a 154 (76-78).

Senior Mary Stewart (Scottsdale, AZ) shot a 163 (79-84) to tie for 27th overall. Sophomore Lauren Braswell (Basking Ridge, NJ) finished one stroke behind with a 164 (85-79) to tie for 31st. Kathleen Kennedy (Annandale, NJ) and Ashley Fowler (Scottsdale, AZ) each shot a 167 to tie for 43rd. Kennedy fired rounds of 85 and 82, while Fowler carded rounds of 84 and 83. Noel Picca (Irving, TX) finished tied for 87th with a 182 (100-82).
