LIMERICK Pa. - Raven's Claw GC, situated on the western edge of Pennsylvania's golf-rich Montgomery County, awaits the golfers of the world.
The owners of Raven's Claw GC announced a soft opening of 12 holes for daily fee play on Friday, May 27. Golfers will be able to play the course for half-price during this special sneak preview. All 18 holes will open for play on July 4.
The upscale daily access course, designed by Ed Shearon of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., is the 60th golf course in Montgomery County. The county, which is only 24 miles long and 14 miles wide, boasts more golf courses per square mile than any county in America.
"Our soft opening will be like a shake down cruise," commented Shearon. "We will have a chance to check all systems before we launch all 18 holes in July."
Only 15 months after the first bit of construction began, the course opens as the latest triumph in Shearon's quickly growing portfolio of acclaimed designs. More important, the construction of the course was completed on time and on budget.
"Because our company can be involved in the design, construction and grow-in of a new golf course, we can control a lot of the factors that create problems on other projects," explained Shearon, who is president of a large, multi-faceted landscape and design company. "We take pride in the fact that we can deliver a great golf course on time."
Raven's Claw is carved from a natural piece of property that contained all of the necessary ingredients for a great golf course. There was just the right amount of elevation change, large hardwood trees, two picturesque streams and scenic vistas of the surrounding countryside. In addition, there is convenient access from the more populated areas to the east, via the nearby 422 bypass.
All of these factors convinced Bob Davis, one of the owners, to start the project, despite the fact that there are already so many golf courses in the area.
"If you can build a great golf course and build it at the right price so that it is affordable for the local golfers, you should do it," said Davis. "A great product at the right price will survive no matter how much competition there is."
Raven's Claw is priced in the moderate range -- $55 with cart during the week and $65 with cart on weekends. Also, there are a number of membership plans available at very affordable prices.
The course measures 6,740 yards from the championship tees and will provide quite a challenge for the best golfers. However, there are a total of five sets of tees and choosing the proper yardage will ensure a pleasant experience for all golfers.
A charming Adirondack-style clubhouse is currently under construction and will open in August.
Raven's Claw is the third design of a new course by Shearon. His first two - RiverWinds along the Delaware River in West Deptford, N.J. and Vineyard Golf at Renault Winery, outside Atlantic City-- each won immediate national recognition upon opening. Shearon also has been involved in a number of highly acclaimed renovation projects, including the George Thomas-designed Whitemarsh Valley CC and the Donald Ross-designed Kennett Square G & CC.
