International Pairs: From Marbella to the Celtic Manor

With less than a month to go until the International Pairs world final at Celtic Manor, officials were delighted to increase the size of the competition after Spain registered its intention to send national winners.

The Spanish licence holder signed up to the International Pairs only this month and a national final will take place on May 29 - just over a week ahead of the world final.

And what a venue they have chosen for the inaugural Spanish final. Around 25 pairs will contest the event at La Quinta Golf & Country Club in Marbella.

Graeme Dawson, director of business development with the Hampshire-based International Pairs, said: "La Quinta has built up an excellent reputation since it opened in 1989 and is now regarded in many quarters as one of the most important golfing centres in Europe.

"It should make for an interesting final, for while it plays relatively short, it is undulating with small fairways and therefore it's essential to be accurate from the tee."

He added: "The choice of venue in Spain is indicative of the quality which runs through the International Pairs. Qualifiers there will move on to Celtic Manor, home of the 2010 Ryder Cup; while this year's UK grand final will be played out on the two much-heralded courses at the magnificent five-star St Andrews Bay Golf Resort & Spa.

"Add in the fact that the USA final was at the Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer-designed King and Bear at St Augustine, Florida, and the Canadian final was played on the fabulous Legends on the Niagara course, and you can see just why the International Pairs proves so popular for your average club golfer."

The International Pairs world final takes place at Celtic Manor, Gwent, from June 7-8.
