A recap of the week in women’s golf:

Annika picked up her 60th tournament win, at the Chick-fil-A Championship, with a 10-stroke lead buffering her from her closest competitor, Candie Kung. Where do you suppose she keeps all those trophies? Has she built a new addition to house them? Man, Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam, both in the same generation. How did we get so lucky?

Meanwhile, Michelle Wie isn’t giving up on her chance to qualify for the U.S. Open. Notice I didn’t say the Women’s U.S. Open.

There you go, guys. She’ll take the sponsor exemptions when they hand them to her, but she’s also not afraid to earn her spots the old-fashioned way. How can anyone not be impressed by this? Just the fact that she’s trying impresses the heck out of me. I don’t care if she doesn’t make it. I don’t care if she does and misses the cut. She’s not letting the naysayers keep her from going as far as she can, and as a result she’s breaking new ground for everyone.

The doors that Annika and Michelle have opened are now being walked through by other women. LPGA player Isabelle Beisiegel and 14-year-old Carmen Bandea are also making runs at their section qualifiers. I think it's fair to say that they're following in the footsteps of Annika and Michelle competing in men's events.

Wie's father has explained that she’s driven by playing against the best. He sounds like my kinda guy—supportive of her dreams, but not pushing her to despair, like, say, Jelena Dokic’s or Mary’s Pierce’s dads.

Keep it up, Michelle! And can I get your autograph for my daughter, please?
