Shaping the future, reshaping the land

In 1991, the Amoco Oil Company refinery ceased operations after nearly 90 years of fueling the nation.

The question of what to do with the 340-acre refinery site became an immediate and perplexing problem; there were significant remediation challenges and opportunities ahead.

The City of Casper, Natrona County and Amoco Oil signed a Reuse Agreement for the refinery land, which stated that any reuse and remediation would be consistent with the full protection of the public health and environment. Also in 1998, BP Products North America, Inc., merged with Amoco Oil Company. BP would later become part of the remediation miracle.

In March 2001, BP, through the Reuse Agreement, commissioned world-class designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. to create a golf course that would be the central element in the Platte River Commons development: the Three Crowns Golf Club. It was named after the three grades of gasoline, and the level of service, one could find at a Standard service station many years ago (Standard Oil was the precursor to Amoco).

The course is a classic Robert Trent Jones Jr. design. Its fairways are lined with white-sand bunkers and approach shots are challenged by still more bunkers and beautifully designed water features — water comes into play on fourteen of the eighteen holes—but the water and the bunkers are also surrounded by diverse and rolling fairways, which offer great landing areas for the golfer who sees the opportunities.

The Three Crowns golf course is also an excellent example of how golf course design has evolved and how modern thought has produced a better golf course. The eighty-six, silica-sand bunkers on the course are eye-catching. The large and elevated tee boxes are staggered, by playing distance. The well-contoured greens are larger than average, and the 9th and 18th holes — both owning greens in front of the Clubhouse — are equally spectacular.

Total playing distance from the black tees is 7,065 yards on this par 72 track. Both nines are par 36.

In August 2003, OB Sports Golf Management, an upscale team of golf management professionals based in Scottsdale, Arizona, was hired to manage the Three Crowns Golf Club facilities and operations.

"The grow-in and the planning were important enough to the ownership team that we were brought in two years prior to the opening date," said C.A. Roberts, an OB Sports executive.

OB Sports specializes in making the golfing experience one to remember, and Three Crowns is no exception. The level of service here might remind some of the oldfashioned Standard servicestation experience.

Three Crowns amenities will include a first-class Clubhouse with year-round dining facilities, golf instruction, a cutting-edge, 1,000 square-foot pro shop, a 13-acre practice facility, and, of course, the world-class, eighteenhole course.

"We're looking to the future, but it's important that we don't forget the past," Roberts said. "There is a lot of pride in the history of the property."
