Birmingham, AL- Becoming known as the "Pearl of the Gulf Coast," Bay Point Marriott Resort is on schedule for completion of the only Nicklaus Design golf course in Northwest Florida. The Nicklaus course and the newly renovated Meadows course at Bay Point are both managed by Honours Golf.
Quality Grassing based in Lithia, Florida, started construction on the course last November. Lead designer Gary Nicklaus and the team from Nicklaus Design, based in North Palm Beach, have created a completely new layout as part of Bay Point Marriott Resort's $13 million renovation. Because Lagoon Legend was known as one the toughest and most challenging courses in America, with a slope rating of 152, the vision for the new course was to create a design that was challenging yet fun and playable for every golfer.
"Our design goal was to transfer an extremely difficult golf course into a fun, strategic layout that golfers of all skill levels would enjoy," said Chris Cochran, senior design associate for Nicklaus Design. "Most importantly, we want those golfers to continue to return time and time again to play the course."
The first phase of construction, which consisted of major earthwork, shaping of the fairways and bunker construction, irrigation and drainage is on schedule and almost complete. The construction of the greens and the new cart paths are currently underway.
The second phase of the construction will consist of grassing (mid-April thru mid-June) followed by the grow-in and maturing stages (mid-June to September), making for exceptional playing conditions when the course opens in early fall.
In addition to completely new hole designs, grasses, putting greens, cart paths and practice facility, the 7,000-yard, par-72 course will also boast a slope rating estimated to be between 125-145, and a course rating estimated to be between 70.0-73.5, allowing the golfers of all ages and abilities to enjoy the course.
