The Hurdzan/Fry USA chapter of Keepers of the Green will hold its Fourth Annual Spring Tournament at The Golf Club of Dublin on Tuesday May 3, 2005 with a shotgun start at 9:00 A.M. Formed to promote the heritage and traditions of the game, Keepers of the Green was organized as the first ever golf tribute to Old Tom Morris who made such an outstanding contribution through all the dramatic changes in the evolution of the game during his lifetime. He was known as “The Grand Old Man of Golf,” and was involved in every aspect of the game becoming a golfing legend in his own time. “Keeper of the Green” was his title at Prestwick Golf Club, as it was when he came back to St. Andrews in 1864. He maintained and improved the Old Course for over 40 years. He also ran a Club-making business employing six craftsmen from 1867 until his death in 1908.
As part of the Keepers of the Green tradition the local chapter presents a powered wheelchair to a needy person. Following this year’s tournament that tradition will continue with the presentation of a specialized “racing” wheelchair to Andrew Vogt of Willowick, Ohio. Andrew intends to use the chair in the Wheelchair Olympics and other competitive events. The Keepers of the Green tournament is also held to recruit new members, and to get the word out about this truly worthy international fraternal organization. A membership to Keepers of the Green costs $125 and includes a set of five hand-made wood shaft golf clubs. All Columbus media are invited to participate. If you don’t have wood shaft golf clubs just let us know, Hurdzan/Fry will provide you with some, or you can play with your modern clubs. If you would like to play, simply RSVP by Monday May 2nd at 5:00 PM to Bob Grossi, David Whelchel or PJ Barton at (614) 457-9955. If you can’t play we hope you will consider covering our event for your respective media outlet. It’s always very visual as many of our participants play in colorful period costumes, i.e. plus fours (knickers), formal shirts, ties and golf caps.
