Faldo upgrade Ballyliffin

April 2005: With more than a decade of design experience under his belt and a growing global portfolio with projects from California to China and The Dominican Republic, Nick Faldo is shaking an increasing amount of mud off his design boots these days. Faldo Design has completed courses in 12 different countries and with several other projects in the pipeline, the company is fast becoming recognized as one of the most respected and sought-after firms in the industry.

As well as the diverse range of projects that are currently under construction, Faldo Design has also been commissioned to undertake the renovation of the Old Links course at Ballyliffin Golf Club on the north west coast of County Donegal. Nick Faldo has had strong ties with the club for a number of years and Faldo Design was the obvious choice when the club decided to enhance and generally upgrade its layout late last year.

“When I first visited Ballyliffin back in the nineties, I had intended to play just nine holes, but I liked the course so much that I had to stay for the full eighteen,” said Faldo. “The layout’s only obvious weakness was the quality of its bunkering, but we are now relishing the opportunity of rectifying that, and I really believe that when our plans are fully implemented the Old Links will realise its potential and become a genuinely world class golf course.”

The essential aim is to improve the course’s strategic qualities by way of a complete re-bunkering programme. Faldo Design will also create some new oceanside tees to better emphasise the natural beauty of the situation. The front nine holes have already been renovated and the reaction from members and visitors to the club has been extremely positive. Once completed (the target date is March 2006) it is predicted that the finished course will sit comfortably in the select company of truly classic Irish links courses.

“Ballyliffin Golf Club is delighted to be partnered with Faldo Design. We are very impressed by Nick’s creativity and his team’s professionalism and dedication to the task,” said John Farren, Ballyliffin Golf Club’s General Manager. He continued: “We feel the finished product will be a landmark classic links course - one which will rank amongst the very best in the world. We believe the renovated Old Links, together with its sister course, The Glashedy, will give Ballyliffin an unrivalled 36 hole championship links complex.”

About Faldo Design:

Faldo Design is a leading international golf course architectural practice dedicated to designing outstanding golf courses in every continent. Established in 1991, Faldo Design has completed projects in 12 different countries and is currently working in North America, Europe, Australasia, the Caribbean and Asia-Pacific.

Faldo Design's portfolio of completed projects includes several award-winning designs, notably those at Sporting Club Berlin in Germany (venue of the 2000 World Amateur Team Championships); Chart Hills in the UK (voted 'Best New Course in England' by Golf World Magazine); the Faldo Stadium Course at Mission Hills in Shenzhen, China; Ocean Dunes at Phan Thiet in Vietnam (that country's premier layout); the spectacular Marriott's Shadow Ridge golf course in Palm Desert, California; and The Rock golf course in Ontario, recently voted Canada’s ‘Best New Course of 2004’ by Golf Digest Magazine.

With more than ten projects currently in detailed design or under construction, and many others in the pipeline, Nick and the Faldo Design team work to a very specific design philosophy: ‘strategy and ‘memorability’ is the company’s mantra. As a player, Nick Faldo is defined by his ability to dissect golf courses, he studies them and works out how to unravel their puzzles. Nick adopts a similarly strategic and ‘thinking man’s approach’ to the courses he designs. As for ‘memorability’, Nick believes that golf courses should be visually very strong with striking features - ones that will inspire golfers and ensure that they never tire of playing the course.

Faldo Design is one of the most well respected companies in the industry, it is admired both for the quality of courses that it creates and for its unstinting efforts to produce diverse and unique courses on a truly global scale.
