Kaye Kessler, Former GWAA President, Receives Jimmy D'Angelo Award

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Kaye Kessler, who was the longtime columnist of the Columbus Dispatch, is the recipient of the 5th annual Jimmy D'Angelo Award, presented by the Golf Writers Association of America.

The award is presented in memory of D'Angelo, who died in May of 2000 at age 90. A native of Philadelphia, where he initially made his name in golf and rose to a position of vice president of the PGA of America, D'Angelo was the first golf professional at the famed Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach and creator of the annual Golf Writers Championship. The final round of the event and the championship banquet have been held for the last 52 years at the Dunes Club.

Aside from being a renowned sports writer and columnist in Ohio, Kessler later moved to Colorado and became media coordinator for The International, the state's lone stop on the PGA Tour. He served as GWAA president from 1971-1973. In 2001 he was presented with the prestigious PGA Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award, bestowed on a member of the media by the PGA of America.

"Kaye has been a staunch supporter of the Golf Writers Association of America and its championship for years," said Marino Parascenzo, a member of the Jimmy D'Angelo Award selection committee and also a former GWAA president. "More important is the fact that he is always one of the most sincere in welcoming returning members to the championship each year and the first to welcome new members."

The award is displayed permanently in the club history section at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach and bears the inscription:

"In the spirit of a treasured friend, this award honors one who has meant so much to the Golf Writers Association of America and to our championship, and who embodies the highest ideals of fraternity, fellowship and sportsmanship."
