The Bahamas Golf Federation, in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism, is in great anticipation of hosting the 10th Annual Caribbean Golf Classic. From all appearances, this event is fast becoming the premier annual tournament for the Caribbean Golf Association. Plans have just about been completed and the organizers are just now sitting back and watching the registration flow.
This annual golf extravaganza attracts more than 200 hundred from throughout the Caribbean and for the last two years the event was held at Casa de Campo in Santa Domingo, The Dominican Republic. This year the event will be held in The Bahamas, on Grand Bahama Island at the Westin and Sheraton at Our Lucaya from May 1-5. Deadline for registration deposit is April 1. The tournament will be played on three fabulous golf courses: Lucaya Golf and Country Club, The Reef Golf Club and Royal Oasis Ruby Golf Club. Many prestigious golf tournaments have been held at these golf courses in the past, most recently, in August 2004, the 48th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship (CAGC) was played at the Lucaya Golf and Country Club.
The Caribbean Golf Classic is a 54-hole championship. The countries can send an unlimited number of male and/or female participants. In this event, golfers compete against other golfers with similar handicaps traveling from the ten member Caribbean countries that make up The Caribbean Golf Association. Flights have been created, so players within the same flight have no more than 5 handicap stroke difference between them. Within each flight, all competitors will play at scratch using a Modified Stableford System with points being awarded on a gross basis only within these flights, players compete without handicaps for individual prizes and also can help their country win the overall championship. (Handicaps only qualify players for flight).
The Bahamas Golf Federation not only will have the pleasure of hosting the event, but is further complimented as one of its own sits at the helm of the CGA, President Ambrose Gouthro. And, The Bahamas holds the distinction of being the defending champions with The Hon. D. Shane Gibson being the overall tournament champion for 2004.
