Mailbag! - DelMarVa and Grokster and Golf Travel, Oh my!

March 19, 2005 – This week's question comes from Jason in CT. "Dear Jay, we loved following your tour journal updates from NC and Florida and look forward to more. You recently wrote you were going to Delmarva? Where's Delmarva?"

Oh, I see why you're confused...you meant "DelMarVa"...kinda like "TriBeCa."

Well, Jason I'll be headed to DC next weekend to attend the Supreme Court Arguments in a major Internet file-sharing case involving Grokster, one of the popular peer-to-peer music download sites that was sued by record companies and music publishers. I handle deals between Internet media distribution outlets and various artists and record/film/tv companies so its a watershed case. The kind that only comes around once every twenty years. They will be disussing the extent to which you, the consumer, will be able to make personal copies of media for limited use and distribution.

More importantly for your purposes, I'll visit some excellent public golf courses in the Mid Atlantic region which are all within 45 minute of DC. By all reports, Augustine in Stafford is the leader in the clubhouse for affordability and design, but we have a good bead on a couple others within and without the beltway and will be reporting from the road.

Yes Virginia, there is great affordable public golf near you. For a bit of pre-tour research, check out www.olddominiongolf.com and www.midatlanticgolf.com.

If the intersection of digital media and the Internet interests you, try reading Ian Clarke's blog
which details his recent debate on the topic at GW law school. Ian founded Freenet, one of the world's largest free, open source Internet projects and moonlights researching artificial intelligence and genetic algorithms. One wonders if teleporting chickens is next. Also check out Mashboxxthe Peer-to-peer platform company who achieved the first deals with the Recording and film industries for limited P2P distribution of media.

For golfers, there are some excellent product tests done on balls and bags by Media Guru and Grouchy Golf.

Oh, and incidentally, its "DelMarVa" = "Delaware, Maryland and Virginia" and "TriBeCa" = Triangle Below Canal Street.

I'll take geographic acronyms for $1,000, please Alex.
