OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – March 14, 2005 – Overland Park resident Pat Maloney will be heading to Phoenix, Arizona in April to compete once again for the World Long Drive Championships. The three-day event, drawing amateur and professional golfers from across the nation, is the premier showcase for some of the longest driving golfers in the world.
Pat started competition for the Long Drive Awards in June 2003 and qualified for the ReMax World Longdrive Championships his first year. He came in second in the LDA Tour event in Rochester, NY, driving for 408 yards with a club head speed of 153 miles per hour. Pat went on to drive for third place in the world at the 2004 World Longdrive Championships.
You may remember Pat as a renowned baseball player at Kansas State University. Pat is in the top 5 of nine career hitting records; the top 10 in 12 seasonal hitting records; and he led the Cape Cod League team, the Brewster Whitecaps, in RBI’s, doubles, triples and home runs. Pat was ranked number 29 in the Best Senior Prospect List in the nation by Baseball America in 2003. He was selected to the All Big12 first teams in 2001, 2002 and 2003. In 2002, Pat participated in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference All-Tournament Team, the American Baseball Coaches Association First Team All-Midwest Region and was a Ty Brown Award winner on the Cape Cod League team for sportsmanship, hustle and attitude. Ultimately, Pat was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 47th round of the 2002 draft.
The wear and tear of professional baseball took its toll, and while at Spring training last year with the San Diego Padres, Pat suffered a shoulder injury and decided to take a more serious look at golf.
Swinging a huge “460cc” club head, designed by Alpha, Pat will be competing in The Players Tour Long Drive Championships, April 9th and 10th at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix. With a lot of practice and strength training, Pat believes he may do even better this year, topping his 3rd place, 367 yard drive at last year’s event.
