Scott wins Nissan Open play-off

Feb. 22, 2005 – Adam Scott of Australia won the rain-shortened Nissan Open at Riviera Country Club when he beat American Chad Campbell at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off. Both players had tied on 133 after 36 holes and no further play was possible on Monday due to the inclement weather.

After more torrential overnight rain quickly ruled out any hope of completing even the third round in Los Angeles 36-hole leaders Scott and American Chad Campbell were told to prepare themselves for a play-off commencing at 9.30am.

The pair went to the 475 yard 18th and Campbell was the man to miss out. Both players missed the green in two and chipped close, but Campbell missed from just over three feet and Scott holed out for his fourth US PGA Tour title.

Scott, who had birdied the last hole of his second round to force the shoot-out, collected $864,000 and moved to a best-ever seventh in the Official World Golf Ranking.

"It was tough for Chad to have two days off and then come out, but a win is a win," said Scott. The cancellation of the third round meant disappointment for Northern Ireland's Ren Clarke and Brian Davis of England, who were joint third only a stroke behind the leaders. Clarke remains seventh in the world but Davis makes an impressive leap from 88th to 75th, despite only 75% of the available ranking points being awarded due to the shortening of the tournament.

Colin Montgomerie, whose second round 64 left him back in fifth place, moved up to 62nd in the world - too late for him to gain a place in the WGC - Accenture Match Play this week, which is available to the top 64 in the world.

The last 36 hole event was the 1996 Buick Challenge and only once before in a history going back to 1926 had the Los Angeles (Nissan) Open not been decided over 72 holes.
