NAPLES, FL – Feb. 17, 2005 – The PGA Tour's Champions Tour has selected Miracle Camp of Sacred Heart Health System, a beneficiary of the Blue Angels Classic of Pensacola, FL, as its Charity of the Year, it was announced by PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem and Champions Tour President Rick George. The presentation was made at a Player Dinner held in conjunction with this week's ACE Group Classic in Naples, FL.
Also recognized at the Dinner were the previously-announced 2004 Champions Tour player award winners; Craig Stadler (Player of the Year/Jack Nicklaus Trophy, Arnold Palmer Award and Byron Nelson Award), Hale Irwin (Charles Schwab Cup), Mark McNulty (Rookie of the Year) and Hubert Green (Comeback Player of the Year).
As 2004 Champions Tour Charity of the Year, Miracle Camp will receive $25,000 from the Tour. Miracle Camp is a premier camp and retreat center for chronically and/or terminally ill children and adults living in northwest Florida and south Alabama. It also serves individuals who are physically and/or emotionally challenged, regardless of financial barrier or physical concerns.
"Miracle Camp of the Sacred Heart Health System is a very worthy honoree," said George. "It is particularly deserving that a beneficiary of the Blue Angels Classic be recognized and receive the $25,000. The greater Pensacola and surrounding south Alabama areas were devastated by the effects of Hurricane Ivan last summer and are still reeling from it in the aftermath. This award will provide additional support and encouragement to a number of very deserving people in the area."
"This contribution could not have come at a better time," said Bambi Provost, Executive Director of Miracle Camp. "Our facility received major damage in Hurricane Ivan. We have repaired the buildings and cleared enough debris to house the out-of town faith-based workers who are in Pensacola to help rebuild our community. The majority of this contribution will provide assistance in preparing the Camp for the children when they arrive this spring."
"The Blue Angels Classic has been involved with Miracle Camp since its inception and continues to be involved in fundraising and board leadership," said Phil Garcia, Vice President and Executive Director of the Classic. "It is the only camp in northwest Florida that provides terminally and chronically ill children and adult therapeutic camping experiences. On behalf of everyone associated with the Blue Angels Classic, I would like to thank the Champions Tour for this generous donation."
The Charity of the Year nomination and selection process was conducted jointly by the Champions Tour and the Champions Tour Tournament Association (CTTA).
The 2005 Blue Angels Classic will be played May 9-15 at The Moors Golf Club in Milton, FL. Tom Jenkins is the defending champion.
Other finalists for the Charity of the Year were The Cam Neely Foundation For Cancer Care (Bank of America Championship, Boston, MA), Camp Smile-A-Mile (Bruno's Memorial Classic, Birmingham, AL) and Backus Children's Hospital (Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, Savannah, GA).
Champions Tour events generate significant sums of money for charity. The three tours of the PGA TOUR and their tournaments have generated more than $900 million for charity since the first recorded donation was made in 1938, with more than $80 million raised in 2004. The PGA TOUR's "Drive to a Billion" is expected to reach the milestone in the first quarter of 2006.
