Feb. 15, 2005 – Grace Park, Lorena Ochoa, Meg Mallon and Cristie Kerr, multi-tournament and four of the top five money winners of the 2004 LPGA season headline the marquee field of LPGA pros in the inaugural $1,000,000 SBS Open at Turtle Bay February 21-16.
All four finished with official earnings in 2004 or $1.1 million to $1.5 million. Park and Ochoa each had 2 victories last year while finishing second and third on the money list while Mallon and Kerr had three victories each finishing in fourth and fifth place in official winnings. The inaugural tournament will be played on the Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu's North Shore where the Champions Tour of the PGA Tour recently competed.
Overall, 13 professional golfers in the 132 player SBS Open field cumulatively won 19 of the 33 LPGA tournaments played last year. In addition to the top four of five leaders the stellar winning field includes top-10 players, Mi-Hyun Kim, Hee-Won Han and Jennifer Rosales, as well as top 20 players, Jeong Jang, Juli Inkster, Catriona Matthew, Christina Kim, Shi Hyun Ahn, Candie Kung, Wendy Doolan and Carin Koch. To date 24 of the LPGA's top 30 players plan to tee it up on Oahu's North Shore. Final player roster closes on Friday, February 18.
"A deep and talented field has gathered here this week, all looking to be the first to stamp their name atop the ADT Official Money List in 2005. The race for Rolex Player of the Year, Vare Trophy and the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year also begin in earnest this week," commented LPGA Commissioner, Ty M. Votaw. Votaw will be among the enthusiastic spectators as the SBS Open launches the 2005 season of the LPGA Tour.
The marquee list of players also includes four of the top seven career money winners on the LPGA Tour including Julie Inkster, Meg Mallon, Beth Daniel and Rosie Jones. Inkster has had a total of 30 victories and over $9.3 million dollars in career earnings for third place; Mallon has 18 victories and over $8.5 million in earnings for fourth place; Beth Daniel has 33 victories and over $8.2 million in career official money for fifth place while Rosie Jones has 13 victories and nearly $7.7 million in winnings for seventh place.
