Top stars for Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Amateur

CHANDIGARH, India – Feb. 15, 2005 – The Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Amateur golf tournament, the eleventh leg of the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour, will be played at the par-72 Chandigarh Golf Course from 15th–18th February 2005.

The event, staged in memory of one of India’s leading amateurs who died in an unfortunate road accident will figure some of the country’s leading amateurs battling it out for supremacy. The main event will be followed by the Am-Am on 19th February, which will see the teams from city’s top corporate houses team up with the amateurs in an interesting one-day contest.

“Royal Challenge is thrilled to sponsor the Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Amateur,” said AKMA Shamsuddin, President, Shaw Wallace. “The Indian amateur circuit symbolizes the spirit of youth and sophistication, synonymous with the very qualities that Royal Challenge stands for. We, as the Tour sponsors, hope to build on this synergy by providing the perfect platform for our golfers to hone their talent and later showcase it on a world stage,” he added. “The Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Amateur is one of the most looked-forward-to events on the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour and golf lovers can be assured of some terrific entertainment,” he concluded.

Last year corporate giants Shaw Wallace announced a comprehensive umbrella sponsorship of the Indian Golf Union's (IGU) National Amateur Golf Tour, making it the very first instance of sponsorship of Indian amateur golf in its entire history.

The Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Amateur will witness the likes of Gaganjeet Bhullar, Simarjeet Singh, Amarbir Singh Lehal, Amardip Sinh Malik, Manav Das and Keshav Misra, among other top amateurs vie for supremacy. With two events left on the 2004-05 season inclusive of the Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Amateur, the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour is poised at an exciting stage. Nine winners have emerged from the last ten events that have been played so far with Rookie Gaganjeet Bhullar being the only one to have won twice on the Tour.

Bhullar, who is currently leading the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour’s Order of Merit will look to the Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Amateur to add a third title to his kitty after claiming the Western India Amateur in January 2005 preceded by the Eagleton Amateur in August 2004. If the Kapurthala lad does win this event he is assured of finishing his Rookie season atop the Order of Merit. The path to the top, however, will not be easy. There will be stiff competition in the form of thrice Sri Lankan Amateur winner Simarjeet Singh (Noida) and defending champion Manav Das (Ambala). Chandigarh’s AS Lehal, placed third on the Order of Merit is in roaring form and will provide the local challenge along with HS Kang.

The Chandigarh Golf Course, venue for the battle, will add to the exciting contest with its challenging layout and strategically placed hazards. With the quality of the playing field added to this, one can expect to witness many ‘Royal Challenge’ moments during the course of the event.
