PROVIDENCE FORGE, Va. -- On a course where players faced challenging terrain and strong winds, victory came down to the final putt as Bo Andrews, 18, of Raleigh, N.C., carded a final-round 80 for a tournament total 6-over-par 222 to hold on to his lead and win the Boys Division by one stroke Friday at the CNL Lifestyle Company Junior Championship. Annie Park, 13, of Levittown, N.Y., shot a 2-over-par 74 final round to top the Girls Division.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the CNL Lifestyle Company Junior Championship featured 99 players from 16 states and two foreign countries. The field consisted of 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18. The Boys Division played The Tradition Golf Club at Royal New Kent as a par-72 at 6,983 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 6,058 yards.
Andrews, who missed the original application deadline for the tournament gained entry as an alternate, was determined to take full advantage of the opportunity.
“It’s weird how it happened, but I took the whole situation as motivation and told myself, let’s get in and just play,” Andrews said.
It was that same positive attitude that seemed to carry him through the final round.
“Today was a big struggle. The course was playing difficult,” Andrews said. “I shot six over [par] on the front side, but then I just told myself to play like I know how to because I am lucky to be out here. It’s not everyday you get to be in the final group.”
Rounding out the leaderboard, tied for second place at 7-over-par 223, was Robert Register of Burlington, N.C., Allan Day of Midlothian, Va., and Wilson Day of Raleigh, N.C. Brandon Squier of Advance, N.C., rounded out the top five at 9-over-par 225.
In the Girls Division, Park carded a final-round 74 – including birdies on Nos. 2 and 9 – and came from three shots back to win by two strokes.
“I thought I got fourth and then I looked up [at the scoreboard] and was like, wow I won the tournament.” Park said. “I tried to keep it steady but with all the wind, today was harder than the other days.”
Taking into account all of the factors that went into the day’s round, Park said this win was a brutal one.
“I feel amazing,” Park said.
Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., carded a 9-over-par 225 to finish in second place and Casey Ann Kennedy of Venice, Fla., carded a 10-over-par to round out the top three.
