PARAMUS, N.J. - Want a glimpse at how completely glossed over the FedEx Cup is in its second incarnation?
One prominent national website (not this one) wrote a preview column on Tim Finchem's baby that included not one, but two references to the Cup kicking off in Westchester. Only one problem ... The Barclays - the first FedEx Cup tournament - moved from New York to Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey this year.
Still, even after someone surely pointed this out at that national website, only one of the two Westchester references got corrected. This doesn't just prove that WorldGolf.com is blessed with better copy editors than most places (after all, any of us idiot writers can make blunders). It also shows how little even many people who are paid to care about golf bother to get into the FedEx Cup. You think anyone's ever forgetting where a PGA Championship is being played that year?
You'll hear more media griping how the playoff point system while improved is still too complicated. And it is. For the fans. But if you write golf and you don't have at least a decent idea of how the Cup works by now, you just don't want to know. The PGA Tour's Chris Reimer has sent out so many explanations, updates and little point system notes on the FedEx Cup to golf writers in the last week and a half that even someone who claims Michael Phelps' school hardship should at least have a working clue by now.
So welcome to FedEx Cup 2. The media still mostly wants to hate it. And it still gives golf much, much better fields than it would ever otherwise have in tournaments this time of year.
And oh yeah, it's starting in New Jersey. At least that's where I think I am.
