Jordan Shuey earns win at CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior

ELVERSON, Pa. -- Jordan Shuey, 17, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., shot a final-round 1-over-par 71 to claim a five-stroke victory at the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior. Brigitte Baker, 16, of McLean, Va., held off a late charge to win the Girls Division by one stroke.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior featured 99 players from 14 states and two foreign countries. The field consisted of 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18. The Boys Division played the par-70 Stonewall Links – North Course at 6,639 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 5,881 yards.

Shuey played another consistent round, staying out of the fescue that plagued so many players, and making clutch par putts when he needed to. The CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior is Shuey’s first AJGA title.

“I struck the ball well all week, and saved myself from having to make a lot of up-and-downs,” Shuey said. “My short game really showed up this week.”

Grant Martens of Pittsburgh, Pa., surged into second place at 4-over-par 214 after posting a final-round 2-under-par 68. Bradley Kushner of Mendham, N.J., finished alone in third place at 5-over-par 215. Mark Endres of Bryn Mawr, Pa., finished in fourth at 6-over-par 216. Brandon Meltzer of Melville, N.Y., rounded out the top five with a tournament total 7-over-par 217.

In the Girls Division, it came down to the final hole before Baker finally closed out Christine Shimel of Kennett Square, Pa. Shimel ran her birdie putt past the hole, but calmy drained the five-footer to save par. Baker was then forced to make her own four-footer to save par and avoid a playoff to claim her first AJGA victory.

“I’m really shocked right now because I really didn’t play like I was going to win today,” Baker said. “I wasn’t hitting many greens, but I really believed in my short putting.”

Shimel finished alone in second place with rounds of 77-77-77 for a tournament total 231. Marisa Kamelgarn of Mahopac, N.Y., finished in third with rounds of 80-77-75 for a tournament total 232.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

The largest Association of its kind, the AJGA has an annual junior membership — boys and girls ages 12-18 — of more than 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 25 foreign countries.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 160 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 300 wins. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Cristie Kerr, Pat Hurst, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome, Morgan Pressel and Julieta Granada.
