Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club sectional qualifier results

AVENTURA, Fla. -- After two days of tough competition on the Soffer Course at the legendary Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club, the results are in for the USGA Amateur Sectional Qualifying event.

Top finishers Stephen Anderson (Hobe Sound, Fla.,) Neil Horsley (Cooper City, Fla.) and Eduardo Chavez (Coral Gables, Fla.) secured spots in the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, N.C. on August 18-24. Anderson finished first with a score of 140/two-under-par. Horsley placed second with his score of 143/one-over-par, while Chavez came in third with 145/three-over-par. Sebastian Pinzon (Columbia) and Yee Hu Tan (West Palm Beach, Fla.) made the two alternate spots.

“Horsley was the only player to break par, which is a testament to our course’s challenging greens following a $30 million redesign,” said Hiro Suzuki, head professional. “This was a terrific tournament and we look forward to welcoming future USGA events back to The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club.”

A total of 65 players competed in the 36-hole stroke play on the Raymond Floyd-redesigned course, one of nine qualifying sites around the state. Other notable players included Jon McLean (Weston, Fla.) -son of golf legend Jim McLean- and Curtis Thompson (Coral Springs, Fla.,) who’s sister Alexis Thompson recently won the 2008 Girls’ Junior Championship and brother Nicholas Thompson competes on the PGA Tour.

The Soffer course was designed as a par-71 with 7,047 yards, and a 74.9 course and USGA 149 slope rating. Like its sister Miller course, it features lush tropical grounds accentuated with contoured fairways, doglegs and water features strategically placed throughout the 18 holes making the course more challenging. A spectacular 64-foot waterfall provides an unforgettable finish on the Soffer Course’s signature 18-hole Island Green, while colorful indigenous flora and tropical trees surrounding each hole serve as a natural privacy barrier so every foursome feels like they’re the only players on the course.

This was the first time in seven years since an LPGA event had been held in South Florida. The resort is scheduled to host the tournament again in spring 2009.

Then November 3-4, the ADT Golf Skills Challenge, NBC’s situational golf competition featuring PGA, Champions Tour and LPGA Tour pros and celebrity challengers, will return to The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club for the second consecutive year.
