BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- The inaugural National Country Club Championship will be contested this December at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, site of the PGA Tour’s THE PLAYERS Championship. A field of 30 teams representing some of the country’s finest clubs will battle for bragging rights as the very first National Country Club Champion.
Three amateurs from each club will be paired with their respective PGA club professional as they vie for the championship title over three days of competition. As an additional incentive, the pros will be given an appearance fee of $1,000, share a handsome competition prize purse and be afforded other amenities. Amateur and professional prizes range from first to fifth place and the teams will compete in a combined format of best ball gross and best ball net. The winning National Country Club Championship team also will secure the right to display the national trophy for a year at their club. Marquis Jet, the leader in private jet cards for fractional aircraft ownership programs, is the tournament co-sponsor.
It is likely that the novel 54-hole tournament may be decided on Pete Dye’s famous Stadium Course island green, the par-3 17th, which is considered golf’s most intimidating hole. The Stadium Course will host the opening and closing rounds of the competition and the second round will be held on the TPC Sawgrass’ Dye Valley Course, which features water hazards on all 18 holes.
The National Country Club Championship field is limited to 30 teams and some 20 invited clubs from around the country already have returned reservations. The entry fee for each amateur player is $3,975, which includes hotel accommodations at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort & Spa (acknowledged as one of the top 10 “Best Golf Resorts in the World”) ground transportation, a welcome reception and closing awards banquet, cocktail parties, contests, gifts and other hospitality.
