MATTAPOISETT, Mass. -- After a three-and-a-half-hour rain delay, the final round of the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic at The Bay Club was canceled, leaving the second-round leaders sole champions of the event. Blake Morris of Waterbury, Conn., shot 5-under-par on his last 27 holes to win the event by two strokes. Olivia Chang of San Lorenzo, Calif., shot a second-round even-par 71 and was victorious with a tournament total 2-over-par 144.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic at the Bay Club was intended to be a 54-hole stroke play event held at the Bay Club at Mattapoisett. After threatening weather and a lengthy delay, the tournament finished after 36 holes. The 97-player field featured players from 15 states. The Boys Division played the par-71 course at 6,917 yards while the Girls Division was played at 6,284 yards.
Morris, 16, who helped lead his high school team to their first state-tournament in five years, posted 9 birdies in two rounds of play. He credited his tee-to-green play as the key to his success.
"I came into this tournament focusing on playing one shot at a time and being patient," Morris said. "I really wanted to play today because this is the best course the AJGA plays all year, but mother nature decided differently."
Finishing two strokes behind Morris was Kramer Hickock of Plano, Texas with a 1-under-par 141. In third place was Eddie Hjerpe of Barrington, R.I., at even-par 142. Tied for fourth were Brian Murphy of Wilton, Conn., Max Campion of Brookline, Mass., and Andrew Lane of Fairport, N.Y posting rounds of 1-over-par 143.
In the Girls Division, Chang, 16, recorded four birdies during the tournament and shot a second-round even-par 71 to leave her mark at the Bay Club at Mattapoisett by setting a new competitive course record. Chang's control of her driving and expert putting led her to her first AJGA title in just two events.
"I know I did my best this week," Chang said. "I couldn't have asked for anything more. I wish we could have gotten this last round in, but I'm proud of myself."
Rounding out the girls' leaderboard in second place was Joy Kim of Pinole, Calif., at 5-over-par 147. AJGA Qualifier Series medalist Suzie Lee of East Northport, N.Y., finished in third with a 7-over-par 149.
