AVENTURA, Fla. -- Three months after hosting the Stanford International Pro-Am, the legendary Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club’s championship Soffer Course will serve again as a backdrop for a prestigious tournament— this time for the United States Golf Association’s Amateur Sectional Qualifier on July 28-29, 2008.
A total of 65 players will compete in the 36-hole stroke play on the Raymond Floyd-redesigned course, which is one of nine qualifying sites around the state. Top finishers will advance to Pinehurst Resort for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship in August.
“To be asked by the Florida Golf Association to host the qualifier shortly after our courses $30 million redesign is a great accomplishment for The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club,” said Hiro Suzuki, head professional. “Next week’s competition will prove to be a tough, yet fair challenge for the players. We’re certain our world-class facility and pristine course will exceed all expectations.”
The Soffer course was designed as a par-71 with 7,047 yards, and a 74.9 course and USGA 149 slope rating. Like its sister Miller course, it features lush tropical grounds accentuated with contoured fairways, doglegs and water features strategically placed throughout the 18 holes making the course more challenging. A spectacular 64-foot waterfall provides an unforgettable finish on the Soffer Course’s signature 18-hole Island Green, while an Audubon sanctioned bird refuge, colorful indigenous flora and tropical trees surrounding each hole serve as a natural privacy barrier so every foursome feels like they’re the only players on the course.

This was the first time in seven years since an LPGA event had been held in South Florida. The resort is scheduled to host the tournament again in spring 2009.
Then November 3-4, the ADT Golf Skills Challenge, NBC’s situational golf competition featuring PGA, Champions Tour and LPGA Tour pros and celebrity challengers, will return to The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club for the second consecutive year.
