Greg Norman is leading the British Open. Yes, Greg Norman. The 53-year-old has shot two consecutive 70s in brutal conditions at Royal Birkdale to take over the top spot in the race for the Claret Jug.
"I don't play much, I don't practice much, but at the same time, there's something about this event that stimulates you," Norman told reporters afterward.
Norman has just played five times total in 2008, missing the cut in his three attempts on the PGA Tour. But with new wife Chris Evert, a wine business, multiple other business ventures and a crisp $100 million bill owed to his first wife, Norman, a two-time Open champion, has turned back the clock.
While thus far it is an amazing story, Norman still needs two more rounds to truly turn the golf world upside down. If the Australian somehow manages to make history, he'll bypass Tiger Woods' knee as the biggest story in professional golf this year.
The big question, however, is should Evert start to worry? Norman has shown in the past an inability to juggle success with marriage. Of course, Norman in the past has shown an inability in the past to juggle success with success on the golf course, so it should be an interesting weekend.
Regardless, however, an epic two-day show by Norman.
