Florida MCL & USMCCCA Benefit Golf tourney in June

Orlando, FL – Feb. 5, 2005 – The 2005 Florida Marine Corps League (MCL) & U. S. Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association (USMCCCA) Benefit Golf Tournament Committee has announced that they have chosen Diamond Players Club Clermont as the venue for their June 9, 2005, 4-person scramble tournament.

Florida Department MCL Commandant Les Homan and Florida Chapter, USMCCCA President James “Red” Carpenter are co-chairing the event, which will raise funding for both organizations’ “charitable, educational and patriotic programs.”

“This will be our major fund-raising event of the year,” Carpenter says. “Our combat correspondents are a small group, but we try to do a lot for both our active duty counterparts and our Marine Corps vets and their families.” The “CCs” host educational seminars for active duty Marine writers, photographers, artists and broadcasters. They also award scholarships, support patriotic community events and contribute to various charitable activities in their communities.

Homan says that the Florida Marine Corps League performs similar activities throughout the state. “Our detachments are very active in their communities. Of course, we’re very active in the Toys for Tots campaign. We also support our Reserve Marines, many of whom are or have served in Afghanistan and Iraq. We also try to assist their families when the Marines are overseas. And we have outreach programs, such as the Young Marines, which teach youngsters our core values, self discipline and pride of accomplishment.”

“We need Central Florida golfers’ support to accomplish our goal of raising $30,000 for our programs,” says Bill Maher, tournament director. “We expect to field 36 teams (144 players). It’s a fun tournament with lots of prizes and a great place to play. Corporate teams are encouraged, but we expect to have room for individual players who will be interested.”

Here’s how you can help:

Corporate Teams and Tournament Patrons are encouraged at the following levels: Platinum: $5,000, Gold: $3,000, Silver: $2,000 and Bronze: $1,000, hole sponsorships and/or donations of money or prizes are requested and will be greatly appreciated. Hole sponsorships are $100, as are the longest hole and closest to the hole sponsorships. For more information, please contact: Les Homan at DMCLLES@aol.com, or (352) 796-1794, or James “Red” Carpenter at JCAR@innet.com, or (352) 688-6720.

Tournament proceeds will go directly to the charitable, educational and patriotic programs that the MCL and USMCCCA provide to Florida’s military men and women and their families – many of whom continue to make personal sacrifices in the defense of America’s freedom.
