SATURNIA, Italy -­ Located in the heart of Tuscany's spectacular Maremma region, Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort recently opened an environmentally friendly 18-hole "green" golf course, bringing an expertly designed championship golf course to the region, while still emphasizing its dedication to sustainability. Designed by the internationally-renowned architect, Ronald Fream, the main objective of the course development was to build a "green" golf course, which would receive the highly-coveted ecological "Committed to Green" certification from the Italian Golf Federation demonstrating environmental awareness and responsibility.

In order to fulfill its goal of receiving ecological certification from the Italian Golf Federation for its new 247-acre course, Terme di Saturnia made strategic, "green-friendly," decisions with respect to the environment including nature conservation, landscape and cultural heritage, water resource management and environmental preservation in the planning and development of its golf course.

To maintain the natural feel of the environment, the design team excluded any artificial structures on the golf-course, therefore ensuring that both the overall structure, as well as the color scheme of the course, were well-suited to match its natural surroundings. Developers also guaranteed that the creating of this new golf course would not affect local fauna, such as deer, porcupines, hares, tortoises and countless other inhabitants of the Maremma region. Additionally, the developers separated the fairways by putting vegetation and plants indigenous to the region in between them, adding to the course's natural look. Finally, throughout the development process, the builders made sure not to disturb the natural resources and ecological foundation of the area, which included the surrounding plant life, as well as the small streams and waterways, which can be found throughout the course.

It is the philosophy of the resort and the architect Ronald Fream that the active preservation of the natural surroundings including floral and fauna, water resources, and animals will provide an added benefit of enjoying the course, allowing the game to become an experience for all senses.
